Uncertainty, complexity and inconsistency are the dominant characteristics of our time. If procedures or solutions to problems do not arise automatically from standards, rules or defined processes, decisions have to be made by people who are in charge.
decisions have to be made by people with responsibility. This is where subjectivity comes into play. This can be realised as a gut feeling, a spontaneous insight, careful consideration or collective consultation, but it will always contain a degree of uncertainty.
The assumption of responsibility entails liability, or at least the obligation to give reasons. Deciding means taking a stand and standing up for something. However, the organisation assigns its members limited responsibility. How can a decision that goes beyond this and extends into the unknown be justified to oneself and other members of the organisation? Is it not more logical to delegate it until the responsibility is maximised? But that would not be an efficient way of dealing with complexity. Consequently, it is easy to exhibit integrity and responsibility externally, but difficult to live them within the hierarchy and division of labour.
The 4th Symposium for Human Resource Management at the Chair of Corporate Education will discuss the issues surrounding the assumption of responsibility in organisations on several levels:
- How do organisations manage to take on responsibility holistically and live up to it?
- What does responsibility in an organisation mean for leadership behaviour and personnel development?
- How can employees deal with responsibility dilemmas in organisations?
